A hybrid ceramic ball bearing consists of steel inner race, steel outer race, ceramic balls ball retainer and seals.
Ceramic balls play the most important role in the bearing system. They reduce the friction, improve the wearability and stiffen the entire bearing system, and make the bearings faster, stronger and more durable.

High precision bearing races are also important to the bearing system. They are made to ABEC-5 spec in order to help ceramic balls run faster and smoother. The ceramic balls are Grade 3. Thus 3/1000th's of one inch from perfectly round. Standard Shimano steel balls are grade 25. Very, very cheap and it beggars belief!!
